Allis Chalmers B or C model?

I just bought an Allis Chalmers and I cannot find a serial # plate anywhere. I am not sure if it is a B or C model. I found on the casting by the gear shifter Tractor # B-46-72....does this mean anything? How can I tell which model I have?

That punched in number you found by the gear shift is the serial number. If it starts with a B then you have a model B.

I have an AC C 1941 and the serial # starts with a C. I think you have a B. Go to serial numbers on the side bar of this web page. Tom

That number does not actually have a dash but a space. It reads B46 72 with no more #'s after. If that means it's a B model, would the year be a 1946 or how can I figure the year?

My serial # shows up like this "C 10 720'. I read this to be a 1941 AC C. Yours looks like "B 46 72". I read this to be a AC B 1938 . Some of these numbers get a heavy coat of paint since they are on a flat surface. Another thing you might try is to rub the number with chalk dust if you think there might be a number between the6 and 7. Tom

if the serial number is 4000 it is very early, pre 1940 (first year of the C). the original B had a BE motor, not a CE motor. look on the engine block at the rear corner on flat boss. Also the pre 1940 models normally had hand brakes, no generator, no starter, probably a pto, maybe no hydraulic pump. The front wheels may be a rivet design tot he center hub. later design was 5 bolts like a car wheel. of course over the years many tractors were conbined and updated.----- ---- could be a B transmission in a C tractor, etc. to check, the B is a wide front axle, normally a wish bone type. the stearing box below the gas tank has the arm point straight down and the rod goes toward the left front wheel and ball socket on the king pin. the C has the gear box arm "up" and the link goes to a bevel box below the radiator. many C tractors are narrow front end. No B was narrow. If you left out a digit in the serial number and it is 40000 , then it would be mid 1940s and would have a CE motor and probably starter and generator.
