Ran across a Allis D14 for sale which seems visually to be in reasonable condition but no one around to ask questions. What is the horse power of a D-14. Have Ford 9N now and this Allis is much, bigger. Anything I need to look out for?

Dennis;

The D14 is rated 31 drawbar/34 PTO, which is roughly the same as a WD. It will pull 3-12s on a good day. Look out for 3rd gear--it gets the most abuse. Listen closely for rattles or roars in the trans and rearend. A slight whine is ok--a roar, beware. Take it up the road wide-open--that will tell the tale. Check the hand clutch for too much travel in Hi-range--it shouldn't bottom out against the stops or pop out of engagement in either range. Check the front engine oil seal--they are notorious for leaking like a sieve. But by far the thing to check most closely is the transmission and rearend--especially 3rd gear and for any noise in the final drives. Other than that you should be okay. These are sweet little tractors. Good luck!

Nebraska test rated D-14 gas tractor at 31 hp at the draw bar.

First thing you need to look out for is what you are going to do with your extra money when you sell that yuppie Ford and buy a real tractor.

Seriously, the D-14 is a great tractor. Easy to convert back and forth to 3 point if you want to go that way, but the snap coupler equipment works great for ground tillage and is usually pretty inexpensive.

The major trouble spot with the D-14, or any D or W series tractor, is the transmission. Years of gear grinding abuse can cause the tractors to want to jump out of gear. Third gear is usually the worst if the problem exists.

Drive the tractor down hill in third gear at a high throttle setting and then suddenly close the throttle. The sudden change to engine braking will cause the tractor to jump out of gear if the transmission is worn too bad. OH!!! Be sure you check the brakes before you do this. If it's a steep hill, and it does jump out of gear, and you don't have good brakes... well it can be a wild ride.

The transmission can be expensive to fix if that is necessary.
