Getting to the point where oil's runnin' out faster than I can pour it in, especially using the brushhog. Can I make a gasket out of whatever's handy or should I find a crowbar to open my wallet and buy one (who's selling?).

More than likely, it's the shaft seal. You'll have to pull the housing to replace the seal but it's no big deal. I bought a seal at my local auto parts store back in 2000 for $6.44 plus tax. National Seal #6241S (A-C Part #224779). When I think about it, it should be possible to replace that seal without pulling the housing. If I were to do it again, I would disconnect the long PTO shaft and try pulling the seal with whatever I could make work. Putting in the new seal should be easy with a deep well socket or a piece of pipe of the right Dia. When bushhogging tall hay, I find the hay tends to wind around the shaft where the two shafts connect and work it's way into the seal which "wipes it out". As Wilfred Brinley says "I check it often"!
