I have and use a Rotobaler and I believe the model year is 1956. I do wish to purchase an Allis Chalmers tractor of the same vintage that would have been used to pull that baler. Which model would do this job the best? After using this baler for a year I do know live power is a plus and low gearing for slower operation. I am wanting to really use this setup to bale hay and occasionally take the duo to a tractor show. Thanks for your help and if you have something to sell I welcome your reply.

AC did a lot of advertizing of the rotobaler showing it with a CA tractor. In my opinion the WD or WD45 would be better, but having had a CA in years past, I know they are a quite capable tractor. I also think you should consider the D series tractors. They are a litter newer than your baler, although AC did make rotobalers later, maybe into the 70"s. The D-14, D-15, D-17 and even D-19 would handle the rotobaler well. They also have other advantages over the WD"s and CA"s that you might find useful. Of course cost is always a huge concern for most of us and typically a WD would be the best deal in that situation.

I agree with Sid. A WD or WD45 with it's hand clutch would be the best choice.

I am interested in purchasing an Allis WD45. I droveone extesnively on my grandfather's farm as a teen ager. These old tractors were the workhorses of my relatives farms in Kentucky. I have seen very few in Texas. Any leads appreciated.

I go along with Sid & Phil, especially since you want to stay in the same vintage. From what I understand, the WD with it's "run in oil" hand clutch was designed to work hand in hand with the roll baler as it allowed a farmer to stop the tractor to tie the bale without having to shift to neutral. The CA is a very capable tractor and powerful enuf to run the baler but the dry "cone-type" clutch will not stand constant use as well as the practically "indestructible" WD/WD-45 oil clutch. My 2 cents
