I got a 1950 wd it has a 12 volt battery w/neg ground, I need to know how to check to see if it has been converted to 12 volt. It still has the generator, the neg wire off the coil goes to the distrubtor, plus there is some ceramic reistor (I think) hooked up by the coil. I need to by a new battery and battery cable but I want to make sure I hook it back up right. It has a newer starter would the tag on it tell if it 12 volt? Thanks in advance

a cutout is a small "box" the size of an icecube that has a wire from the "A" on the generator and a second wire that runs to the amp meter. this is a 6 volt system.----- --- a 12 volt system has a voltage regulator which has 3 wires, the "A" anf "F" wire on the generator go to it, and it has a third wire "B" to the battery. --- there is such a thing as a 6 volt regulator, but not on the Allis tractots.

The tractor doesn't run, I am working on it. The tractor has a 12 volt battery that I need to replace and I'm not sure that they converted it to 12 volt or just stuck a 12 volt battery in. What I would like to know is can I tell if they converted it before I buy a battery or not. I don't want to buy a 12 volt battery to find out that the generator can't keep it charged or that something is going to burn out. Thanks

Well, if it's been converted it must have a voltage regulator instead of the original cutout. Read on the bottom of the regulator and it will usually have the voltage marked on it. Just a couple of things to look at.

I guess I don"t really understand what you"re asking. You just said that it has a 12 volt battery in it so I would say that means it has been converted to 12 volt. The resistor by the coil is to make a 6 volt coil work on a 12 volt system. The tag on the starter may or may not say. The 6 volt starters do well on 12 volts though. If it"s been converted to 12 volts, then it must have a voltage regulaotr on it. Often they"re marked on the bottom as to their voltage and whether they"re for positive or negative ground operation.

what does the amp meter say when motor is running. if you got amps, then you regulator was changed to 12 volts and the negative ground is correct system. ----- all you do to change to 12 volts from 6 is to put a resistor on the coil, put a 12 volt voltage regulator, and normally a 12 volt generator. starter is o.k.--- sometimes the generator is capable of putting out 12 volt and reused.
