#4 piston not firing

Probably a simple problem to a AC owner but not for me. I have a 54 wd45 and have had a few problems but all are fixed but this one. The #4 piston is not firing. I checked and it has spark and is wet with gas. No water or antifreeze in oil or on spark plug yet it will not fire. Had valve cover off and noticed some play in rocker arms but I did not think it was extreme. Is it possible that valves would stop piston from firing. When I remove plug it is wet and has spark yet I can take wire off and there is no difference in engine running, so it is giving nothing for power. Would you think exhaust valve is not opening or closing or ? Doesn't sound bad when running on 3 but would like to have full power as its time to work. Any and all ideas for checking and or fixing would be appreciated.

Thanks,
John

While you have the valve cover off see if you can get a .010/.012 feeler gauge under the rocker arm between valve stem. If not you need to be able to. When you pull the plug wire hold it so you can see spark between the plug wire and the spark plug end. If the cylinder starts to fire you have a bad plug. If the plug is bad it will fire this way. Quick and easy way to check for bad plugs.

i would pull the plug and put thumb over the hole and see if you have compression while turning. also pull dip stick and make sure no presssure in crank case (ppiston is o.k.). if that is good, i am betting the plug is bad. some will fire in atmosphere, but not under load and pressure. change with #3 and test or better yet, get yourself a new set of 4 plugs and install.
