Help. My neighbor has a D-19D that runs well but has little power. Tractor was originally a gas model but when engine needed overhaul he swaped in the recently overhauled diesel engine from his other (early) D-19 with a bad rear end. Tractor runs fine but has little power. I suspect turbo charger is not functioning properly. Turbo is original, does turn and generates at least some boost as can be determined by sound. One can hear what sounds like a waste gate pop off as the engine runs at speed but I can find no waste gate on the engine. What limits boost on these engines and how does one determine if system is functioning properly? Also, where can one get a new or rebuilt turbo at a reasonable cost if the turbo turns out to be the problem. Neighbor who is full-time farmer uses this tractor as his back up "big" tractor behind green and yellow 2940. Thanks in advance for all advise.

Did you check the timing on the Roosa Master injection pump? Did you change out the fuel filters? No leaks at any of the Bosch injectors or feed lines. Return fuel line open to the tank? Are the valves all adjusted properly once the engine is brought up to temp? Does it have a working thermostat in it? They're exspensive for those Buda engines but if it doesn't have one and get up to temp of at least 170 its never going to run right. Is the air filter clean and free of obstructions i.e. dust, chaff or evan a mouse nest? Those are some easy things to check before you put money into a turbo. That engine should have alot power evan without a turbo. Its the same 262 that came on the D-17 without the turbo and they are capable of some serious work.

Thanks for the advise. I have not checked any of these things but will pass your advise on to my neighbor. Engine sounds good and does not smoke either black or white except some white smoke for a minute or so after start up. I am not really a diesel mechanic nor is my neighbor but we can check these things. Could be the thermostat. Neighbor has not been one to concern himself with such things. Thanks again.
