Does the end of the canvas with the flaps install over the top or the bottom?

If by 'over the top', you mean that when the installation is complete, the loose flaps are visible on top of the canvas, that is right. They need to be exposed so the middle flaps can be adjusted just as tight as the outer ones. If you turned them down, you would have to reach inside the canvas to tighten them. Also, the loose flaps hang 'downhill' from the joint, and after a few revolutions will flatten out properly.

Not sure what you mean by over the top or over the bottom but both canvases are installed so that the flap is turned away from the joint when running, not over top of it. The easiest place to make the joint is just behind the sickle. Drop the flap end under the top drive roller and feed it to the bottom and over the bottom roller. Run the end with the bolt joint down the top and make the joint behind the roller and just in front of the notch for the bars.
