Fun With An Allis B

Friday night I put the head back on the Allis Chalmers B that I had put a new sleeve and piston kit in. Saturday morning I swaped the engines back where they belonged. Hit the starter and she wouldn't fire. Did a compression check and got about 12 pounds on number one. Pulled the head back off, pulled the valves outa the head. I found that the hardened seat inserts that I had NAPA install were not giving a full circle imprint on two of the exaust valves. Numbet one cylinder exaust being one of them. NO problem I says ta my self, I'll just regrind the seats. Ya right, all four exaust valve guides were oversized to the point that I didn't have a mandrel that would fit. THANKS NAPA! 350.00 head rebuild and it looks like all new intake valve guides but didn't change the exaust guides. Still not a big problem cause I bought a tractor from a guy several years back and he said he had rebuilt the head. I had pulled it and looked it over. It was clean on both sides with all new valves so I put it in a plastic bag.
Put that head on an torqued her down and hooked every thing back up. Cranked her over and she spun way to easy. Broke out the compression gauge and low and beholed I couldn't even get a reading on the gauge. pulled that head back off and took the valves out. New valves put in on rust pitted seats. So much for some one telling you they rebuilt the head. Valve guides were only .001 over size so I reground the seats, tuched up the valves and put her back on. Hooked every thing back up with dark settin in and checked the compression. Got 75# on all four. put the plugs back in and give her a try. Stinker would not start.To far past dark sooo I called it a night. Seemed like Saturday was a waste. Checked the timing this morning and it was right on. Checked the gas and she was full flow with a half tank. Plugs were not that old but with a new set in a box why not give it a try. With new plugs installed I hit the starter and I just about messed my drawers when she took off at full throttle. Forgots to hook up the governer crossover the last time I had it off.
I mowed my three acres of grass and she runs like a top and starts upon hitting the starter.
I guess it was worth it anyway.
