AC 5040 Starting After Sitting 10 Years Outside

I've been offered an AC 5040 that has sit outside for about 8 to 10 years. I know very little about these, aside from the fact that they were built in Romania and that there was an identical Long model. I also know very little about diesel engines, but figure now is as good of a time as any to start learning.

Can anyone give me any tips as to how to go about getting this thing going again? All in all it doesn't look too bad. The hydraulics might be another story from what I've read, but for now I'd be content just to get it running.

I don't care to spend a fortune getting it going. Just looking for something to work on as a project for me, and since the older gentleman who has it would like to see it being put to some use again I figured I'd give it a shot. I'd appreciate any insight on these tractors, as well as any good links on bringing a diesel back to life after it has sit for a while. Also, where can I get a manual for one of these?

Thanks for the help guys.

I have a 5040. Good utility tractor, powerful, yet very fuel efficient. I would start with why has it been sitting for the last 10 years. Bad engine, transmission, ect. If it ran well when parked, then try changing fuel, and oil filters, available at NAPA dealers. You will have to bleed the injectors to get the diesel up to the injectors. Manual is very helpful (look on ebay), requires a very strong battery to get the fuel system represurized.

One of THOSE tractors! in reply to ScottT80, 08-19-2004 13:07:16
Scott

I worked at a place that had one of "Those tractors." Talk about an electrical nightmare. Short after short...eventually I got out a spool of wire and made the simpleist wiring harness I could design. Key switch, starter, generator, voltage regulator and one inline fuse. I abandoned all lights and other nonsence. I also seem to remember it going through alot of bateries and starters before the rewireing.

Good luck!
Chuck

I have a 5040 I use nearly daily for 6 years with little trouble. Manual and operaters manual are available from agco dealer $50 well spent. Diesels need to be run to keep seals and rings in shape.I myself would not want to dig very deep into the engine but look in the manual as it goes through a complete rebuild and decide for yourself. I will post back later with a website for some parts. Honest to goodness I called agco for a new starter, he was embarrassed to tell me agco's price was $1500.00! I bought a new starter made in Russia for $325 instead. When asking for parts I get a lot of "Oh you've got one of THOSE" The tractors don't have a very good reputation and that makes all the one's I've seen sell for less than other major brands. So I would'nt want to put much money in one and expect to get it back when I sold it. The one I have works great and I gave $4500 for it 6 years ago. But I can't see putting a loader on it for $4000 because it will never be a $6000 tractor. A-C 5040 should be same as Oliver/White 1250 1250A 1255 and Long 460.
