ok I have asked this before but looked at it further at home last night.
trying to adjust the valves. on the fly wheel I put it so #1 piston was up easy to do with the head off. looked at the pointer on the fly wheel and it was painted red with a etched mark.
I then wanted to find 180 degrees and mark it so I could rotate and adjust valves easier. there I found a scribe line with an F. so I marked it as bdc. then I rolled it back to tdc and before that mark hit there was another scribe line with and F.
are the F's there for TDC and BDC? or is the paint mark and scribe line TDC?
The paint line and scibe line puts the piston at its very top point. should I set the valves on the F's? can someone explain this more to me?

Your trying to be to technical to just set the valves with a feeler gauge. You need to have the lobes on the cam at its lowest point so that both valves on the cylinder you are checking are closed. You can watch the rockers come up and then check between the valve stem and the rocker arm. After setting to .012 move the flywheel one way a small amount and recheck without adjusting, now move the flywheel the other way and recheck. If you get the same reading at all three locations you have it correct. If not you can tell by this where you are at to find the largest gap and readjust to the .012 feeler gauge thickness.

I am still not getting my question answered.
what are the 3 timing scribe lines on the fly wheel. one is a scribe then the other 2 are scribes with an F about 180 degrees apart.
can someone please explain those.

No!
At least not as far as production goes. You have one scribe with TDC on some and others have CENTER for the same scribe. Then up 30 degrees you have one marked FIRE. I have not seen one with a mark at one at 180 degrees which is the opposit side when looking in the inspection hole. That would confuse any one trying to set up the timing.

got it running tonight and it ran good after all the trouble.
but yes there is 3 scribe lines and there is one at 180 degrees marked F and one top dead center. I verified that watching the valve when we rolled it over.
