WC Distributor or Magneto?

I'm helping some FFA students restore a 1939 WC. We want to restore it as original as possible. Our tractor has a working distributor, but all the reference material we've seen only talks about magnetos.

Could this tractor have had the distributor as original equipment? or do I need to find a magneto to replace it.

Thanks for the help!

Buster,
On the WC, a magneto was OEM equipment. The Fairbanks Morse "K" series (FM4B) or the "J" (FMJ4B3) series Fairbanks came on the WC. Either choice would be correct for the WC in general. Both mags had a grounding lever on the side of the unit to shut the engine off. We rebuild, service, sell parts, and complete Fairbanks units if you decide to install one on the kids' project. Drop us a line if interested...

Thanks for the offer, but I think I'll hang on to the distributor for awhile and work all the kinks out of the restoration with a system that the kids are familiar with. In the meantime I'll start looking for a mag to convert back with. This should prove to be very educational. Thanks again!

A good working mag is hard to beat, but yes a lot have been converted to distributor ignition. Finding a mag shouldn't be that hard and working on it if necessary would be a good learning experience for you students. I can't remember if a '39 is styled or unstyled, I always think of a WC as a great looking unstyled tractor! Good luck.

Thanks for the help guys! Restoration project is for a competition so it looks like we might need to find a mag for originality.

I recommend leaving the distributor on the tractor. Couple of reasons - (1) You don't have to spend several hundred dolars for a magneto. (2) The distributor ignition is easier to work on. (3) Parts are much cheaper for the distributor ignition than the magneto.

mag was standard till late 1950s. all WC and WD had the mag as original equipment. lots of modifications over the years.

Mag was standard on the WC, and first WDs. When the WD45 came out in '53, they came with the distributor as standard equipment. Many earlier tractors were switched over to the battery ignition with distributor because they started easier and were more dependable.
