Is there anyone out there in the world of AC equipment who is familiar with the fluids that should be used in a 918 backhoe loader?
(1969 vintage) I have rebuilt the engine on this beast of a machine and have just installed it and I am getting excited to move some dirt. I have ordered the shop manual but it has been back ordered forever. I still do not have a promised delivery date. I have drained all of the fluids and changed all of the filters but I am unsure as to what fluids to use and where their fill ports are.
I do know where the hydraulic fill port is for the main pump and I plan to use a standard hydraulic fluid here, but there are two fill ports on top of the transmission; both with dip sticks. The one on the right has a small cap that looks like a radiator cap and the one on the left has a 1/2" NPT fitting with a vent plug on top. This machine has a 2800 engine and power steering and hydrostatic transmission. I am totally at a loss as to which port is which and what fluids to use. I also need info on the fluids and fill port for the rear end. If anyone knows this machine or may have access to a shop manual and can help out a frustrated shade tree heavy equipment mechanic I will be forever gratefull to you. Thanks Gary

I have the operators manual for my 918 backhoe. The fill port that has a radiator type cap is the transmission oil dipstick. I think we used AC 821 or Phillips HG, but the book calls for part no. 249680. The final drive oil fill/oil level plugs are at the rear SIDE of each final drive compartment and uses same lube type as the transmission. The other fill port with the vent cap plug is the shuttle clutch torque converter & power steering dipstick, use Type A fluid. To fill add 15 qts of type A thru the torque tube filler. Run engine at low idle for 30 secs, then increase to high idle for 10 secs to transfer fluid to front compartment. Stop engine and replace enough fluid to fill system.
Capacities: transmission 32qt final drives each 8qt
shuttle/converter 8.5Gal

Try asking your question at the unofficial Allis-Chalmers site . you may get an answer quicker.
