From the fan, which is the #1 piston? From what I know from the fan it is 2134
And on the distributor which is the #1 and does it go counter clockwise looking down at the cap?

The worst part is trying to blink your ear fast enough to see the timing marks! But my tounge get sore holding it on the coil wire!

The piston closest to the radiator is #1, then comes 2, 3 and 4 at the rear. The firing order is 1243. Depending how the previous mechanic installed the distributor, any position on the distributor can be made #1, but usually it's the one farthest ahead and closest to the block. To be sure, remove all spark plugs, turn the engine over slowly while holding your thumb over #1 spark plug hole. When you feel air being forced out around your thumb, you know that #1 is getting ready to fire. Pop off your distributor cap and look where the rotor is pointing. That will be #1 on the distributor. Hook that wire up to #1 spark plug. The distributor turns clockwise so hook the next hole on the distributor to #2 cylinder, then to #4, then to #3.

I tried timing by "ear" once..... made 'em sore, so I quit. (-:

Couldn't help it, Jim.
