AC-CA Generator/Light Switch

My Allis Chalmers CA does not have a light switch. I understand that this switch had a resistor(s) that controlled recharging the battery. Can I replace the missing switch with a resistor? Does anyone know what size resistor I would need?

the generator has two terminals. the "A" goes to the cutout switch mounted on the generator and from there to the ampmeter. the other terminal is the "F" terminal. this is basically the "ground". it runs to the light switch. when you have the lights off, the wire is grounded thru the "resistor" to give a minimal ground and therefore a low 2 ampcharge. with the lights on, the F wire goes directly to ground and therefore has a 8 amp charge. i think the resistor is about 2 ohms. you can ground the F wire and it will charge o.k. for a hour or so. if you are running more than an hour you need to put a load on the battery such as the lights to keep from overcharging.
