Rough running WD

I've been overhauling a WD engine recently. So far, I've rebuilt the carb (Zenith)did a simple top end overhaul (cleaned/planed head, new gaskets). My problem is that the engine still runs rough. It always starts, and it never stalls...it just needs some fine tuning. I've messed with both adjustments on the carb. Neither adjustment seems to have any effect, even when I completely open or close them.

Any ideas with the carb or in addition to the carb?

Thanks for the help!

Get a shop manual. There is a timimg mark on the flywheel that can be checked with a timing lite.
I am also from Iowa and could copy you on it.
Also make sure that there is not a vacuum leak at the cyl. head / manifold connection.
Also you could recheck the valve clearances.
Some times the rocker arms get "steps" worn in them from hitting the valve stems so many times
that it is impossible to get a correct adjustment
unless you grind the rocker faces flat. My 2 cents

Is there a way to know whether there is a vacuum leak at the head/manifold? I had the manifold planed and the end near the front of the tractor was thin. When we put it back on the tractor, and attempted to tighten it, it cracked. So, we had it brazed...do I need to have it replaned?

Thanks for your help!

I agree with Kevin. Also make sure it is timed correctly, in correct timing can cause it to run rough. What plugs are you using. They say that these older AC's don't like Champion plugs and you should use AC or Autolite plugs. Could also be something with the plug wires.

I have the correct plugs, it fires on all cylinders and the firing order is correct -- any simple way to check the timing?

An old mechnic showed me how to check the timing on a tractor with a distibutor by losening the distributor and turning it first one way until you can here the engine pull down and then back the other way until the engine pulls down. He then said to adjust the distributor to the middle where the engine should run very freely and then back it off just a little so the engine pulls down just ever so slightly. Kind of hard to explain but he was showing me on my D-19 and was able to listen to the change in the engine as he did it. You can really notice it. Not sure if that will work if it still has the magneto on it or not. Been a while since I have messed with my WC.

Where exactly did you loosen the distributor?
