TAD - Responding to your questions... I need to worry about the higher amperage this generator is supposed to generate? Probably not the stock tractor wiring should handle the higher current OK. Can I use the standard cut-out relay? No! A cutout is designed for low output, self-limiting (3-brush) generator systems. It provides no overcurrent protection for the generator - could result in burning out your higher output generator under certain charging conditions. If I use a voltage regulator do I need one rated for 40 amps? Absolutely! Generator and regulator must be matched to each other. Use the wrong regulator and the system wont charge properly, and you risk overloading/burning out the generator. The "old guy" at any good starter/alternator shop should be able to set you up with the right regulator. If I use a voltage regulator, how do I hook it up? Wire the regulator to the generator per below: Regulator BAT terminal > ammeter Regulator GEN terminal > generator A (or ARM) terminal Regulator FLD terminal > regulator F (or FLD) terminal Be sure the regulator base is solidly grounded it wont work right if it is not! Do I need to change my 20-0-20 ammeter? Probably not. The needle may peg when the battery is charging hard but it wont hurt the ammeter. (I have a 63 amp alternator on a Farmall. Its been pegging the original 20-0-20 ammeter HARD on every startup for nearly 25 years - the ammeter continues to work fine) Hope this helps!
