The battery on my early 1940s WC (converted to 12V) keeps draining. I bypassed the ammeter and light swith (which were in bad shape anyway). I get no spark when I touch the positive cable to the positive pole of the battery, so I think the problem is with the generator not charging. I put a brand new cutout switch on, and I still drain the battery. Could it be the generator? How can I test it myself? Local auto parts stores don't want to test it for me since they can't sell me a replacement.

to test a generator, remove the two wires off the A anf F terminals. ground the F to the frame. start tractor and measure voltage across the A and F terminals. if you dont have a volt meter, use a light bulb and two wires. good generator will put out about 20 volts so dont leave it connected more than a few seconds. if the generator works, then problem is possibly a bad ground. the light switch is a ground for the "F" wire from the generator. there is a resistor on the back of the light swith that acts as a partial ground for the "F" when lights are on. make sure the switch case is grounded good and the instrument box is grounded good.----- the cutout opens a "switch" when the motor is off and keeps the generator from acting as a gound and draining the battery with motor off. remove the wire from the cutout and see if it still drains the battery..--- also , a cutout is for 6 volts, if you have 12 volts you normally have a voltage regulator, not a cutout.

Check the generator first. Put a reasonably accurate voltmeter on the generator output (BAT terminal). With the "F" terminal grounded and the engine running, you should get a minimum of 14 volts. Actually, 17+ volts would be more like it. If you don't have this voltage, the generator is bad. If you do have this voltage, the problem could be many things. It could be a bad regulator. If you didn't install a regulator, be sure you are still connected to the resistor on the light switch. Remember, you need 13.8 volts to charge a 12 volt battery satisfactorly.

If you have about 14 volts from the generator under the normal configuration, your problem is most likely a bad connection between the generator and the battery. Do the above tests and get back with me.

Sometimes it is just so much simpler to install an alternator. They are more trouble-free and easy to install.

I am always game for the easy way out. It is late here in Indiana and I will run the test you suggest tomorrow. Would any alternator do?

I bought the tractor from a yahoo who left it out in the weather for a year--the engine was siezed up.

Any alternator will do. There is plenty of information in the "articles" section to the left of these pages. Look to the "6 to 12 volt conversion" articles. A GM 10SI alternator can be had for about $10 at most junkyards. If you really want a rebuilt one, they run about $40 at auto parts stores. These alternators were standard on most pre-1985 GM vehicles. The Nippondenso alternator off a used Toyota will work too - and is better if space is at a premium. Pick up either one - I can help with wiring instructions if you have any questions.
