I'll try it. What's the worst that can happen.

Perhap there's a fix that can be engineered.

Can the rolling element bearing be replaced with a bronze bushing?

you can do anything if you have the ambition. i was bound and determined to fix mine and not buy a rebuild. i bought two small ball bearings with the right ID and a 1/8 inch or so bigger OD. i mounted the pump in the lathe and machined out the bearing bore for the new bearings. I bought a water pump seal for a swimming pool pump that was the right ID and OD and did a little rework to install under the impeller. entire job was about $20. or half a new pump. not simple, but i enjoy a challenge and have the tools to do it.

i rebuilt mine, and i would not recommend it. in the front fan end, you pull off the hub and take the snap ring off that keeps the bearing from moving forward. in the back you need to use a puller to remove the pump vane. the seal is below it and can now be pulled out. if you are fixing the seal or replacing it that is o.k. if you are going to push the shaft forward out of the housing, good luck. the bearing will probably come out without destroying it. problem is the shaft is the inner race of the bearing and can not remove the outer race or balls without destroying the bearing. been there done that. not a pretty sight. in the long run it is cheaper to buy a pumpfrom one of the guys on this site.
