Hi all I am a newby to the orange world. A friend of mine who has the local ultralite strip has an ole allis that really mows the grass. I love to hear it cackle. He was wondering what model it was and when it was made.

I thought that all WC's were the unstyled ones. However this tractor is styled like a WD/WD45 and the tractor number reads WC93942. If the WC's looked that way, the registry shows it as a 40 ?

I would appreciate it if someone knowledgable in the orange world would give us some help on this one.

unstyled normally refers to tractors built prior to 1938 or so. The fenders are an arched flat plate. the hood is flat panel possibly curved in one direction, the radiator is exposed, not wrapped with a sheetmetal cover, the gas tank is oval or square with flat front and back ends. Styled normally means the tractor has a tear drop shaped gas tank, rounded wraparound on the radiator, shapely hood that flows into the tank and tear drop shaped rear fenders. Go to the left of this page under "gallaries", then "tractor photos", then type in WC. check out a 1934-37 then look at a 39-40 and note the difference in shape.

Late in 1938 Allis Chalmers changed the WC from the unstyled ones to the styled that look like the WD series.

WC and WD sheetmetal looks similar after styling. WC uses what looks like a 5 ton truck axle. WD uses a newer design "tractor" rear alxe housing.

Styled WCs had two rear axle styles. Most were cast iron, but during WWII, they used a pressed steel axle, with the drop boxes bolted on, rather than part of the main casting. All WD tractors had a center cast differential housing, and cast axle housings bolted to the center unit. And the 'drop box' was bolted to the axle.
