The brakes are gone on my C, and there is very little clutch left. Is it a pretty tough job to fix the brakes on a C? And the clutch as well?

the brake bands are held in by two steel pins. there is a c-clip inside the ectangular opening, on a grove in the pin. unscrew the adjuster and remove the spring. look inside and get the c-clip retianer off. punch on the end of the pin and try to get it to move. soal with PB blaster- penetrating oil-etc. From the center of the tractor, drive the pins outward toward the wheel. once the pins are out (not an easy trick), you can remove the shoes. clean out any durt, oil and mouse nest from under the shoes. wrap a #9 wire on one end of the shoe and tie it to a prybar to get leverage. move the shoe out an inch at a time untill it is all the way out. the hole must be clean to get shoe out and new shoe in.. pins can be a real pain to remove. spray them good several times and let soak. lot of driving and punching to get them out. clean good and anti-sieze when reinstalling. Clutch is really an easier job because no beating or banging, but it is more involved since you need to seperate the motor from the torque tube. i have an ange iron frame that bolts to the bell houisng on each side with the 5/8 threaded holes. two leges hold the housing, transmission and rear end in the normal position. i take the tank and hood off. put chain fall on the motor valve cover bolts. pull bell housing bolts and slide the motor forward with the chain fall, then rotate 90 degress and work right there.

Thanks for tips on replacing the brakes. Is it possible the clutch just needs adjustment?

Neither is too bad, the brakes might even be classified as "easy." Best bet is to get a parts manual and a service manual, it is pretty well laid out there. Have fun.
