Larry,
There's a few different avenues you can take with a generator. A couple Steve mentioned, but the problem in my opinion with the 12V generator is the external regulator. First hiding it, and second, it's reliability because it's external, and leaves itself open to condensation and moisture, which down the road start troubles. If you want to run a 12V system, the simple and more reliable way would be with an internal regulated Alternator like Delco's 10SI. The regulator is built-in to the Alternator, and is solid state, and very reliable. No extra wiring, no hiding, not much to fuss with. We've changed a lot of 50's and 60's cars from generator or alternator with external volt regulator systems to the two wire internal regulator systems simply because their owners are tired of messin' around with the old systems. Yeah, it doesn't look OEM, but the owners that we changed over aren't worried about the correct police. The reliability factor is pretty high, and that's what they're looking at. A long trip now is pretty much worry free. We have quite a few of our 12V conversion systems for AC machines out there and so far everyone likes them. The choice is yours though, cause' it's your tractor. Its just my opinion. Believe it or not, the 6V system is just as simple, and works fine. It just needs a little more attention to keep it on track and reliable....

your stock generator is 6 volt, about 10 amps. two methods to go. you can get a AC 12 volt generator off a 1959 chevy car and install and it looks very close to stock.--- second plan is the 6 volt generator you have will put out about 15 volts.-- to test, take off the wires and ground the "F" terminal. start tractor and measure the voltage across "A" and "F". if you get 12 volts or better, then you can install a 12 volt regulator and make it put out 12 volts. it does work, but realize you dont get much current. a few amps will charge a 12 volt battery, but your not going to run the kids stereo with it.--- hide the voltage regulator under the gas tank inside the sheetmetal and run the "A" and "F" wires to it. third terminal is the "B" for battery.--- use the voltage regulator for the 1959 chevy truck-- works good.

why do you want the converstion because if its just cause it wont turn over fast enough then why not just put a 8 volt battery in the are fairly cheap and problly cheaper then changing every thing over thats all i did
