WD runs well cool, take it out and work it till it is well up into its working temperature it misses badly. Seems to run pretty good cold, maybe slight sputter when you crack throttle open. Does this sound like sticky intake valves? This behavior also seems to foul plugs. Put in fresh plugs and it seems not to miss when hot for a few times out and the missing comes back again.

This sounds strange, but we have always had this.... If there is ANY Water in the sediment bowl-- and I mean just one or two drops--ours will miss under load...!!! Make sure there is no water in there..!! If you think it might be a valve sticking some. get it warm, and losten the small plug in the intake and have a full squirtcan of engine oil ready... With the engine at 1/2 throttle, squirt as much in the intake as the engine will handle and still remain running... It WILL smoke like a freight train steamer, and sticking valves will go away..!! We do this at least once a year.. Good luck, and let us know what you find..!!

Thanks a bunch for your info. (both of you). This is great to know. Regarding gasoline additives; Do you believe in adding "lead replacer" to the gas? I have seen some stuff I think called CD2 (something like that). Is this something a person should do since these motors were originally intended to be using leaded gas? I am going to put the autolite plugs in and try your suggestion of spraying oil in intake. I seen an ad for an automatic oiling system that did this also, for these older engines. Sounds like it would work. Thanks, Jim

Jim,
You didn't mention whether your WD is mag fired or distributor, but to me it sounds like your on the right track with the ignition. It could be something as simple as a set of points for either ignition, or time for a new spark plug wire set. On occasions a faulty condensor could cause the problem your mentioning in a mag. Also, if it is mag fired, the older style tar-taped coils break down from heat as the machine labors. If distributor fired, we've come across some wobbly main shafts upon rebuilds, which causes misfires due to worn distributor bushings, or rusted advance weights. You didn't mention who's plugs your using. If it's Champion's, right there could be your problem. A set of 295's or 303 Autolites might eliminate the problem also. I forgot to mention that the WD misses bad when hot and under load. If I am just driving through field not working, it does not miss real bad. Just gets bad when working hard.

Did you get this problem solved? I have a D17 with the same thing and cant cure it. If I knew what happened to you, i might be able to figure out mine.
