AC 200 questions

I am looking at a 1972, AC 200. It has about 5000 hours, is dual valve, 30t, wfe, cab, of course. I noticed when examining it that it has the power director(?) system. There is a 4 speed tranmission and a high/neutral/low lever. You get live pto by shifting the PD (?) into neutral (right?) rather than having a completely separate pto clutch. This looks as if it works fine, BUT, my question: are the hydraulics also using this sort of arrangement? The most important functions for this tractor would involve using both pto and hydraulics to run a Baler and Moco.

Beyond the hydraulics/pto questions, are there any general comments about these tractors? The price seems reasonable, but I've never owned an AC before, so I have little experience on the matter!

Well you got most of it correct, but the hydraulic pump runs off the engine so the clutch doesn't affect that. They are a great old machine but make sure you get plenty of starting fluid if it dips below 80 degrees!!! It takes some getting use to using the power director (we just called it the torque). You tend to push the clutch in first instead of grabbing the torque and going for neutral. You will like the fuel economy though, 3 1/2 to 4 gallons an hour working it pretty hard. Hope this helps. Make sure it doesn't jump out of 3rd gear going down hill!!!

I have a 190XT diesel which is basicly the same tractor. The only time I have to use starting fluid is if it is around freezing. If you have good compression and a good fuel sytem they stert easily. The 200 had a better rear end and some transmission improvements as compared to the 190. Check to make sure it doesn't jump oit of gear when you decelerate. The power director works like you described. Not as handy as a full live pto but it works. Like Walyy said it is pretty easy on fuel and has plenty of power. Most will put out more than advertised.

OK I was kidding a little on the starting fluid, but up here in the northeast you should carry a can if it goes below fifty. The Totalseal engine kits make a HUGE improvement in starting and the blow-by. Its the only kit I will use anymore!

one more thing to check on the Power Director is the condition of the clutch plates. the easiest way to do this is start the tractor, put it in 1st gear let out the clutch and then put the power director in neutral, if the tractor still wants to move then you have some warpage on the clutch plates. when the tractor is warmed up good or the transmission is in a higher gear you won't notice the drag on the power director as much.
