I own an WD-45 and the differential or final drives are pretty noisy. I use sae80-90 gear lubricant.

If it is only noisy in a couple of gears I wouldn't think it would be the final drives, it would be noisy in all gears, because it is allways turning. This might sound silly, but are you sure it is a WD-45, alot of people get a WD and a 45 mixed up, a WD will have some gear noise when driving, because of the different tranny. hope this helps.

thanks for the info, no it's not noisy in reverse but in 3rd and 4th it is pretty noisy and also there is no filing metal in the diff or final drive pans. I think that sound came of the final drives.
thanks,
Guyzoo oh and also when goinn uphill or downhill it is quiet.

You can take the cover off the back of the differential and look in and maybe see the condition of gears and possibly bearings. Removing the final drive pans will allow you to look at gear teeth and check for play in these bearings. But it could be the axle shaft bearings on the pinion gears for the final drives too.

Thanks for your info I removed the cover and the pans a couple of weeks ago and gears seems to be in pretty good shape. bearing also seams to be tight.
thanks again

Can you narrow down where it is comming from? Try the long screwdriver in the ear trick to check for sound, louder where the bad bearing is. Place the blade on the housing, the handle in your ear, it will transfer the noise to you surpriseingly well. Does it do it in all gears? Does the noise increase with speed? How about in reverse? Any metal filings in differential housing? There could be some in the transmission from grinding gears, but there shouldn't be many in the differential. Can you locate it by jacking up the tractor and running one wheel with the other stopped? Apply load with brakes. This will tell you if it is in one or both final drives if the noise is from the side. Let us know what you are finding out.
