I recently purchased a 1938 B which is great, except boy are the hubs (final drives?) noisy. There seems to be a lot of slop in the gears, as I can feel the lash during lightly loaded, e.g. varying downhill conditions. The final drives are full with 30 wt. oil, as stated in the operator's manual. The previous owner said it has been noisy for years (decades) and not to worry about it. Are all B hubs this noisy? (I drove a 1941 Farmall the other day which was a lot quieter.) Is 30 wt. oil the right stuff or should I be using 90 wt. gear lube? Thanks.

My '39 B is pretty noisy too. My Brother had a '38 one time, and it was very loud. Something to check is the splines the hubs are on. They can get loose sometimes and cause some play, and chattering noise, but whining is defenatly in the gears.

I believe I would put some 90 Wt. gear lube in it mixed 50/50 with Lucas. My CA is noisy and it sure helped it.

Thanks. I think my reprint operators manual is wrong, as 80/90 wt. oil makes more sense. What is "Lucas"? Also, I do not recall seeing a drain plug. Do I need to dissassemble the final drives to drain the oil?

Lucas is a lubrication additive. Got to www.lucasoil.com and you can find a dealer that handles it close to you. Great stuff.

Hi Vance,

My original '42B manual calls for SAE 90 below 32 deg F and SAE 140 above 32 for the final drives. There is no drain plug - only a fill/level check plug. You need to drop the pans to clean out and drain.

the top bearing is splash lubricated. if you have crud or heavy oil inside it will not get lubed. put 90 wt gear lube, about 2 quarts in each. jack one wheel up a couple inches off the ground and rock the wheel back and forth, and in and out. see if there is any play in the bearing. they are cup and cone and may need adjusted.
