On earlier post had problems with oil leak, spit tractor found problems with mains not torqued to spec, WELL found they had used shims on the main, upon examining found that the insert protruded 0.025 above the main cap on one side. Is this normal for the AC tractors, also shims mic'ed out at 0.09. and with the shims removed torqued at spec.s plastigage showed 0.0015 clearance. Should I file the insert to where it is flush on both sides..... ...Thanks for all info::: Keith

not usre i get the question exactly. the shims go between the cap and the block. they dont go under the bearings insert. you start with 3 shims about 2-3 thousandths each so 9 is possible. if you have 1 mill clearance without the shims, you might need a 1 or 2 thousands shim on each side. not supposed to put shim on one side only. If you have new bearing halfs, yes they will need to be filed so they have 1.5 thousands "crush" on the bearing. they should not be loose where they will float. the beawring actuall sticks up a couple thousands above the cap. platigauge is good start, the final "test" is to finger tight the bearing and roll the crank, then torque and reroll to "test". lots of times i have to remove the cap and add .001 to get easy roll.

Steve here is the question, the bearing in the main cap seems to be to long, withit flush on one side of cap, there is 0.025 sticking above the oposite end of the main cap. When i take the insert out of the cap,put it on the the crankshaft, it does not touch the the journel in the middle of the bearing. I think you answered my question, "Do I file the bearing so it is flush" you said file so there is 1.5 thousand crush. Also I realize that the shims go on each end of the main caps. Whom ever put this together the last time seems not to have done it right. They had only torqued the mains to 40 lbs.
Thanks for you info Steve. PS: will be picking yours and others brains untill I get this "C" put back together.

Keith- I recently had my block/mains and rod/caps machined to do away with the shims. I found it 'mickey mouse' and with harder modern bearings not needed as much. In that process they also found that the bolts in the rods were pushing in on the back of the bearing and screwing up clearances. I then put it together without altering the ends of the shims. The extra crush is still there. Yes, it was a bit tight the first few times I cranked it over but it's fine now. I have about 40 hours on it now and starts on the second crank most days... I don't know where you are in Oregon but the machinist that did all that for me is an old time chevy mechanic at Baxter's at Delta Park (part of Portland).

Sounds like a good idea.Sounds like he line bored your block. I used to deal with Baxters when they were a small Auto Parts store on Lombard, just west of Gleeson. couple blocks east of Curtis. I lived on Curtis. Guy that run it was named Lyle, the last I heard he had strickly taking over the warehouse part of Baxters. I have gotten the shims all back in ,Plastigaged, torqued and ready to go. I am 180 miles east of Portland, couple of mile south of the Columbia River.
Thanks....Keith
