Low compression

My WD 45 has a miss and upon investigation I find out the cylinder that has the miss has about 65 PSI. The rest of the cylinders have 120 PSI. Is my fix to put rings in one cylinder or do you have another option for me? Appreciate your help

Simnple way to determine if the problem is a valve or rings. Take compression test. Add oil to the cylinder. If the compression comes up the problem is rings. If it does not the problem is a valve. If you are lucky it is an adjustment problem. And I do mean lucky.

The valve clearance should be .012" HOT. You can buy a special set of feeler gages that are longer than normal and bent at an angle and you can check the clearance with the engine running. You just stick the bent end between the valve stem and rocker arm and you can feel the amount drag on the gage as you slide it in and out. Takes a little practice but works fine. You could also bring the low cylinder up on TDC of compression and pressurize the cylinder with compressed air and check for air coming out of the intake or exhaust(valves problems) or crankcase breather(rings problem).

Unless you know of a reason to believe a ring is bad, I would think it is a valve....it might even just have some carbon caught between the seat and the valve.. Have you adjusted the valves lately..( within the last couple of years )..??

I have never adjusted the valves. I though that if it was a valve it would not hold compression and would leak down. Can you help we with the settings on the valve? Never done that before...

I don't, off-hand have the clearance settings. I am sure you can find them on this site.. You will need to remove the hood and valvecover. (Not hard). You should then check all the valves-- With the sparkplugs removed, and using the hand crank you can turn each cylinder--one at a time to "Top Dead Center" on the compression stroke. You can tell when that is, as both valves will be closed and there should be the prescribed clearance between the rockerarm and valve stem. You must be careful when measuring the clearance, as the rockerarms rear unevenly, and are usually worn more on one side as they usually don't make full contact with the valvestem. You can get a good measurement if you are careful, ot remove the rocker arm shaft, and carefully file them to level the wear pattern out..this makes setting the tappet clearance a lot easier to get an accurate setting.. Settings should be made HOT, but you can add .002" to the Hot setting and get it reasonably close.. Never should there be a tappet clearance less than that called for, or you will burn a valve.. While you are there, if that cylinder is still low on compression, use a Brass hammer, and tap the valve-side of the rockerarm ( or valve, if you have the rockerarms off), to "Bounce" the valve on it's seat..maybe a piece of carbon is caught on the seat...this will dislodge it usually. ONE THING I WOULD TRY...is to remove the little plug in the intake manifold ( while it is running), and have a FULL squirtcan of good motor oil ready. With the engine at about 1/2 throttle, squirt as much in at a time as the engine will stand and keep running...!!! This is a great treatment for the valves... It WILL Smoke like Hell, so don't do it inside any building...!! We do this to all our gas tractors every year..!! I hope this get's you going without a teardown..!! But, you should check the valve tappet settings, anyway, after you put the oil thru it.. Let us know how much smoke she makes...!!! Good Luck..!! Ron.
