I just visited with a neighbor & he just got a D17 yesterday, he asked me about the serial number, he showed me the number, D17 4248, he said that a couple books he has say that the D17 numbers start with 4300, I looked at the number very close & it definately is 4248. This one has a different hood from a series 3 tractor with the oval muffler & hole in the hood, he has a series 1 that he says is newer than this "new" one. What's the scoop on this situation? I know nothing about Allis tractors so I dont know what I was looking at or what to look for.

Roger;

The D17 with the oval muffler is a Series III or IV. 1957-1960 was the Series I. Series II ran from 1960-1962. Series III was 1962-1964. The Series IV was '64-on. Series 3 & 4 had decals on the hood instead of the Series 2 metal plate. Series 2, 3 &4 were Persian Orange #2 with cream wheels and grille. Most Series 2 had headlights on the grille shell, 3 & 4 had them on the fenders. You can without doubt tell a Series 3 from a Series 4 because the Series 4 had the hydraulic pump mounted on the right side of the torque tube where the belt pulley used to be. Have no clue about the Serial#--you seem to be missing a digit. Hope this helps.

D17 started in production in 1957 at 1001. Last Series one was in 1959 at 23363. Series two started in 1959 at 24001.

Correction; 1957-59 plain and black-bar grille D17s were "unofficial" Series 1. 1960-'62 were "unofficial" Series 2. Series 1 & 2 never had any factory badging on the tractors. Series 3 had designation on tractor Serial Nos.42001-72768, 1962-1964. Series 4 was 1964-1967, Serial Nos. 75001-89213.
