Thanks alot for any help----BUD S.

The clutch free play is adjustable. If you are new to tractors, the first thing is to get the operator manual. Helps you with basic ID of controls, adjustments, lube requirements, etc. Beyond that, get the service manual when you want to go beyond basic maintenance.

If any oil or grease is getting on the clutch plates they will grab like that. As to adjustments I am not familiar with the D-17. I am a WD man! I would suggest however you ask your question on here xxxallisxxchalmersxx.com xx. Remove all x's first. Go to the discussion forumn there. I would highly recomend you get the operators and service manuals for your tractor.
