I BOUGHT A D 14 THAT WAS NOT RUNNING. DID A VALVE JOB, OIL CHANGE, ETC. STARTED IT UP AND IT IDLES PERFECT. WHEN I OPERATE IT IN THE FIELD IT RUNS GREAT FOR ABOUT 3-4 MINUTES AND THEN ACTS LIKE ITSD RUNNING OUT OF GAS. THE ONLY WAY I CAN GET IT TO STAY RUNNING IS TO PULL THE CHOKE OUT ALL THE WAY. I DRAINED THE GAS TANK AND CLEANED THE SCREEN IN THE SEDIMENT BOWL, AND DRAINED THE CARBURATOR, BUT IT STILL DOES IT. ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE CARBURATOR SETTINGS ARE? ANY OTHER IDEAS?

A gas cap that is not vented will cause that problem

Tom,
All the guys made valid points. We do a lot of carb rebuilding here at the shop. If it's a Marvel TSX model carb, the enrichment circuit in the carb may be plugged with rust and crud also. I've been finding this problem a lot when I rebuild these units for our customers. Sometimes the passage is completely blocked, and if you didn't know it was there, you would overlook the problem. Rust in the bottom of these old carbs is big due to water laying on the bottom in the cast iron carbs over the years eventually plugging up the enrichment passage and or jet. Sounds like a carb & fuel system overhaul to me also. Check for a vacuum leak too. Maybe the intake has a crack and when the engine gets up to temp, it starts to suck air and vacuum leak through that expanding crack... Good Luck!

Most carb settings on the idle screw and load screw are about 1 1/2 to 2 turns out from bottom. Should run on that, and adjust from there.

After a good carb cleaning, float adjustment, etc.- might need to adjust the load screw to give enough fuel- actually, easy to try that first, then go beyond.

It sounds to me that you have crud in the fuel tank, paint chips, rust chips, straw, whatever. Those are common problems on the older tractors that I know about and whatever is in there blocks the outlet in the tank but is too large to go through to the screen. The other thing is you should tear down the carb and clean out all the passages wiith air and as best you can, make sure the float valve is not sticking closed, a common problem.
