I have an old WD which came without a battery, first would that be positive ground or no? And second, how do I know if it's 12volt or 6 volt? It has regular sized battery cables if that matters, and the distributer/mag?? sticks backward instead of upwards like our 12volt wd-45 does, if that means anything.. Thanks for your help, I don't want to fry anything.

WD's were all positive ground 6V. Stick with the 6 volt system, it works fine but you do need the 0 gage cables and keep all connections, including grounds clean!

All WD tractors came with a magneto and 6V positive ground. Those battery cables are probably not going to work with a 6V battery, as they are too small a gauge to carry the required current.
If you want to go with 6V, get new cables that are at least 2 Ga. This is one place where bigger is better. 0 Ga. or even 00 Ga. will be better, even for 12V. If you decide to go 12V, just use a positive ground so the generator will charge the battery. If you must switch to negative ground, you'll have to repolarize the generator and reverse the ammeter connections.

The earlier WD's came with a magneto as standaed equipment rather than a Battery type ignition. It sounds to me as though the WD you have has the magneto ignition and the WD-45 has the battery type ignition. as far as telling whether it is positive ground or negative you can look at the battery cables for a hint, the ground strap will fit on the positive treminal of your battery if it is positive ground and it will be too small to fit if it was negative ground...this might not always work but it gives you an idea.
As far as whether it was 12 volt or 6 volt look at the light bulbs if you have any. the 6 volt bulbs will burn out in short order if you try to use them with 12 volts.

Somebody might have put on a distributer like the ones you would find on IHC that were distributers. Like on the 300, 400 etc. Got one on an old WC here.
