Emmett,
Jim Danforth is one of the best people to deal with. He's well worth any extra it costs.

Thanks, we are working on getting the problem solved now. I chatted on the phone with Jim. He is very informed and has a fair enough price. Told me it may not be the head and how to check. Thats called old fashion dealing. Not selling someone what they may not need withot checking what you know it could also be. Fair trader for sure. Thanks John for your input. Emmett

Im in 38569 zip. I want a complete head, used is fine. As long as its in good condition. I have the rocker assembly. The head I have is cracked, someone tried to weld it. No wonder the water coolant is in the oil pan. Also if you ship FEDEX the cost is much cheaper for heavy items. Most of the times its less than half the other shipers. Thanks, Emmett

Jim just wanted you to know I filled the radiator as per your instructions on the phone. Right after you talked with me. So far several hours later. Not a drop of water coming out. Looks like its going to be the head. I will leave it that way until Monday and call you with the weekend results. Is there a way to check the water pump to insure it works? May be why the head cracked. I can tell you it dont leak anywhere visable and the radiator is still holding water solid. I am going to flush it while Im at this. Have it pressure checked. Talk to you Monday on the phone. Emmett

SOunds like it. Either the head is not true, or there's a rupture to the water jacket. Give me a shout Monday and we'll work it out.
As far as the fair trader, it has always paid off in the long run. I don't need short-term customers, I'm only 31 an plan on being in business a LONG time. Hope to bring my sons in to take over.

Hey Jim , still no water leak. There is one other problem I found on the #1 cylinder. I have 2 bent pushrods. Bent very noticeable, Has rubs on the sides also. The tractor had a slight miss. Didnt seem like it had the power it should.I had to compare it with the IH B model I owned prior. Got rid of it because of the tricycle front. I have a steep hill to work on and that had me afraid of it.The C dont seem to have the power the IH had. I guess the bent pushrods is the reason.By the way you mentioned pulling tractors. I know where theres an old Iron wheel tractor . Im told they use them for that purpose. This one is cheap, if intrested, let me know and I will get info on it. Emmett

That's not good. Your good deal is going south fast. I have pushrods too.
I'll bet your tractor was stuck, and was made unstuck by forcing it over. That's a common thing. Yes I do pull. I took 1st place today with the C I was telling you about. Is the tractor you mention an AC? I've been wanting an AC on steel for a long time.

Jim I dont know what Kind it is I will go ask and take pictures, of the old tractor.I hope pushrods are not a bad sign. I just checked the tractor for water again. I got maybe 4 or 5 drops of water from it. Thats all weekend until tonight at 10pm. I am going to drain the radiator and pull the head.I bet theres cracks under the head also. The weld on top of it is pretty big and you can see leaking rust area at the edge of the weld.I will need two pushrods also, for sure. I want to look at the valves to see the condition.Maybe they will work. I will go look at the old steel wheel tractor, if I can catch the old man home. I will take pictures. Get a price for you also.Try to find out what it make it is.Maybe if you dont want it someone else may.Whats you assesment of my position with my tractor. What do I need to do next? Has the head you have been magnifluxed? Or is it one you know to be a good one? Let me know ,Emmett

Emmet, no it has not been magnafluxed. I can have that done, and if OK, add it tot he cost of the head. My feeling is that it is good. I've had it soaking in the vat for a few days, and it has cleaned up very well. Was actually toying witht he idea of porting and polishing it if it didn't sell. I have pulled everything but the valve guides. Seats look good, though I have not closely inspected each.

Here's my opinion of where you are at. I don't know what you have in the tractor, so I can't give a full opinion. You need a head. It would be wrong to sell the tractor unless you told a new owner, and that kills the value. I wouldn't pay but about $150 for a tractor with a bad head. If that's all that's wrong, then I would fix it. Is the tin OK? did it drive OK whatr little you were able to drive it? I would go with your valves for now. Just lap them good. Have it rebuilt locally later after getting some return on your money.
Different strokes for different folks. I'm a minimalist. I do what it takes to use it without causing further damage. My father is the opposite. He would completely rebuild the engine just to know it was right. In the end, his would last longer, but at what cost? Many of my minimal fixes are still working hard and long since paid for themselves.

PS. I may be in and out tomorrow at the shop.

No problem. We will be out of the shop, and the cell phone may or may not work at the show we will be at. If it roll over to voice mail, leave a number that's convenient, and I'll call back.
