shattered starter bendix jammed betweeen flywheel

Help,
anyone have an easy fix for a shattered piece of starter bendix jammed between flywheel and bell housing without splitting tractor? I have the head off and can move pistons a little but not enough to get to larger opening at about 9:00. The piece is jammed in tight at about 7:00. Is there a way to turn motor backwards to drive this piece up and hopefully loose?

Jack up one rear tire and support/block up that side of the tractor. Put tractor in 4th gear. Turn the top of the elevated tire towards the rear of the tractor.

You didn't say what model tractor you had. If there are inspection plates on the top and bottom of the bell housing - remove them. You may be able to reach and leverage out the stuck parts with a bar.

My problem with the bendix is with a 54 wd45. By jacking will it turn motor backwards as I think this is what I need to do. I was thinking of hitting pistons on top with oak 2x4 and maul but I'm afriad I'll bend connecting rods or ?. It sure would be nice if the rain would stop though. The way its raining here the tractor may have floated away by now. Thanks for the help. I'll try to get going this weekend if it stops raining. I want to get unjammed and head back on asap as i need to mow.

Reread the description of the problem. Is the piece is stuck between the bellhousing and the flywheel at 7 O'clock, near the bottom of the bellhousing? Pull the inspection plate behind the oil pan. The offending piece should be right there.

I pulled both inspection plates. I can see the broken part thats jammed between flywheel and geared wheel for starter to catch on they the front cover. the 1 by the oil pan. I can reach it but it won't budge. even with a hammer and punch. i definitely need to get it to about the 3:00 position to get a little more room. Although the saw is an idea. Does anyone know if bendix gear is hardened as it would be tough to cut if it was. If it ever stops raining here I may get a chance to work on this thing. We've got like 4" in the last few days. Thanks for all the suggestions and I will let you all know how and when I get this out. It sure is jammed solid. I really need to get motor to go 1/4 trun backwards and hopefully that will give me enough play. Thanks again to all for the suggestions and I will try all asap.

With one wheel off the ground, tractor in 4th gear and the clutch engaged. Turn the top of the wheel/tire backwards, toward the rear of the tractor. This should turn the motor backwards. You will get a lot of leverage by turning the tire/wheel.

Try it. It will only take a couple of minutes to jack up one wheel and put blocks under the drawbar or differential. The worse that can happen is nothing moves.

Pull the inspection plates and see if you can't get a bar inside the bell housing to reach the offending part. There should be one on top of the bell housing, one on the bottom, pull the belt pulley, and another on the front right behind the oil pan. The plate behind the oil pan will probably give you the most access to the offending part.

If all else fails, pull the engine. You need an engine hoist, but there really isn't that much holding the engine in the tractor.

Have you tried a crowbar on the flywheel gear teeth?

no i haven't. are the teeth realitively strong as it is really jammed in as i can't even budge it with a hammer tapping on a punch?
