Need info on 1963 AC ED40

I'm looking for a tractor to buy and found this model with a loader, 4 cyl diesel, excellent tires, original 3 pt hitch, live pto, $3,500. This is all the guy knows. Can anyone tell me about horsepower or how many bottoms it can handle on a plow. Also likely transmission and general reputation for reliability. He says it starts hard. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

These are English made AC's. They used the Standard Ricardo engine which were available cheap after Massey Ferguson switched to Perkins for the MF 35. The ED40 was developed from the AC "B". From what I've read, the engine and tractor doesn't have a good reputation, but some argue otherwise. Main problems were the engine and cracks in a rear housing. The "Depth-o-matic" hydraulics were not well received either. You're best bet is to buy Norm Swinford's book on AC Agricultural Equipment and read up on the ED-40.

I think they are about 50 horse (maybe 40 hence the name ED40) Ours is still going and is the most reliable little tractor you would ever come across, I think ours is about 1956 however could be wrong.....I have heard bad things about the engines however ours goes every time we turn the key, three little puffs of smoke and it runs as clean as anything. And yes they do get cracks in the rear housing. They were originally desinged as a light cropping tractor so best not used for anything really heavy duty however we pull a tonne or so around with ours with no problems, and run rotary slasher, grader blade etc, havent ever tried a plough with it. Everyone has different opinions on the ED40 especially the engine, but if yours runs fine it has done so for 40 years so there is no reason to change it now!

Transmission - ours is a four speed forward and single reverse, with a high low ratio box so effectively eight forward and two reverse
