I have a 2nd year production model B, it makes noise with the clutch pedel out, and it stops if you push the pedel in. The noise sounds like a shaft running dry...would that be the clutch throw out bearing gone bad?

John, Look under the torque tube housing for an acess hole, you may find a cross if so start looking for a grease fitting. I have an A.C. mdl.C that had a similar problem, I found a grease fitting and greased it and things have gotten ALOT less noisey.

I have several throw out bearings go out over the years and the first noise that I would hear would be the squealing noise after I took it out of gear and climed off the tractor with the engine running. Some times the noise would stop after a while for a few weeks and then start again. I have one now that lets out a squeek every now and then and I tell myself that I gotta fix that someday.

With your foot off the clutch, the throwout bearing should be backed away from the pressure plate fingers, and not turning, and therefore, should not be the source of the noise.

If the noise stops when you step on the clutch, it sounds like a bad transmission bearing, or lack of lube in the transmission.

I'm with you, Bob; sounds like the input shaft bearing. If there is correct "free-play" in the clutch linkage, the throwout bearing will not spin with the clutch released. I have experienced what Dick L. speaks of; squeeling of the TO bearing as it spins free after clutch is released.

i had the top shaft front bearing go bad in my 1942 B and made the same noise. I blame it on the lube. had 140 gear lube or thicker. I am a firm believer in the universal hy trans fluid (20 wt).
