HD6s did not have G.M. engines. HD5 had a G.M. Detroit Diesel, but it was replaced with the HD6 that used a 344 cubic inch Buda engine. I have no trouble getting parts for mine.

In reply to jdemaris, if I'm not mistaken, Allis Chalmers used Detroit Diesels in every model to the HD16 for certain. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the HD6 in question has a Detroit. It just means that it is anything but new. They also don't have the power of the Buda engine, but that's the difference between 2 cylinders and 4 cylinders.

Detroits in "every model to the HD16?" NOT TRUE. What information do you base your claim on? I'd like to see some sources. I own a 1954 HD5 with a Detroit Diesel 2-71 (142 c.i.), and also own two HD6s, both with Buda four-stroke 344 c.i. engines. ALLIS NEVER MADE AN HD6 WITH A DETROIT. I also have an H3 with an Allis four-stroke gas engine and an HD4 with an Allis four-stroke 200 cubic inch diesel. So, there's an H3, HD4, and HD6 - all NOT using Detroits. And . . . by the way, the HD16 does not have a Detroit either and neither does the HD11. I have the Allis Chalmers production records here in front of me, and they read: HD5 produced from 1946 to 1955. It was replaced in 1955 by the HD6 which utilized the four-stroke Buda 344 cubic inch engine and production continued through 1974.

jdemaris, There used to be a parts supply house I dealt with several years ago in North Dakota called Surplus Tractor Supply. Their listings were by model number and engine type - either Detroit or Buda - from the HD5 to the HD21. I never dealt with Allis tractors, they were never popular in my neck of the woods. I know the 3 & 4 had Allis motors - I own an HD3. Sorry, I don't have their production records to quote from. I guess my two-cents-worth isn't worth that much. Sorry to bother you with my junk facts.

My AC manual for the HD series doesn't list the Detroit until the HD 7 model. The manual I have for the HD6 only list the 344 AC engine--no reference to the 2 cycle Detroits..My 80 year old mechanic buddy has a 6G that had a 271 in it but it wasn't factory. (No engine in it now.) I believe with the "spicer shaft" setup between the engine/rockford clutch and tranny, it was easy to install just about any engine that would fit. He said I could have this one, but I haven't decided what to do with it. Looks like a big job just to move it.

I've seen quite a few that received engine swaps. The HD6 is basically, just a HD5 with the updated engine so it doesn't take much to swap engines. I looked at an HD5 today that has a Chrysler gas engine in it. But, again . . . HD6s were never made with Detroits. The "6" designation evolved after AC had a dispute with G.M. and took on the Buda engines to replace the Detroits.

The 3-cylinder will fit too. Is it a 53 series or 71 series?

Okay, now that i know about the engine. how about the undercarriage. he says it is 85% on the good side or 15% worn. where do you guys get parts for the undercarriage? also, steering cluthes are important with crawlers. can you still get ac steering clutchs?
