Hard starting D14

Looking for some help, I have a 1957 D14, 6vdc pos grd, that runs great once started, but does not want to turnover during starting. I have had the generator check, the starter checked, new points and condenser, gone through the wiring, had the voltage regulator checked and finally this weekend bought a new 625cca battery. Still is hard to turn over. If I remove the plugs, engine spins great, put the plugs back in and does not want to turn over. It sounds like there just isn't enough drive in the electrical system, but this is the second new battery in two years.

I am really searching for answers. Tractor runs beautiful when running but am really frustated with this starting problem.

I had the same problem with a 1952 Ford flathead V8. As Dale says - it was the cables. They need to be big. I got 1 gauge for my 52 and it now starts great. My D14 is still on 6 volt and it starts easily but it has big cables.

Doug, These 6-volt systems need to have the large cables.(12-volt size won't work) Might go to your welding supply store and get some 0,or 00 size cable and make your own cable. Be sure the hole that the starter lives in is shinny clean and the sides of the starter where it makes contact are also clean. Also, the battery to ground contact points should be shinny clean. This will probally help but it still won't spin like a 12-volt system. Dale
