I am looking at purchasing my first Allis Chalmers and have two options. A WD for $1500 with a trip loader or a D-10 without a loader for $1800.

What is the better investment and how much are D-10 loaders?

My use is for loading manure and pulling a spreader as well as snow in winter.

Thanks for any help,
Chris

i'd say the wd is a better tractor, and it sounds like what you would need fer loading manure.

Thanks for all the input it has been tremendously helpful. I actually purchased the WD-45 last night and will pick it up. The D-10 also sold last night to a different guy. However, I am in Wisconsin and I found both tractors on a Wisconsin farm website, www.wisfarmer.com A great site to find AC's.

As several others noted, the D-10 is certainly worth more (a lot) than a WD. Once you determine whether it is a WD or WD45 (again, easiest way is the engine side plate (WD) and then double check serial #), you also need to check over the D10. Earlier D10s have a 138c.i. engine while later ones a 149c.i. engine. The earlier ones are very nice tractors and have around 27 drawbar and 30 PTO horsepower. The later ones have around 30 horses at the drawbar and 35 at the PTO- basically the same as a WD in a more modern and compact package. These later tractors are highly prized, and worth far more than a WD and more than a WD45 in anything close to the same shape. Check the serial number on the torque tube/engine joint located on the left side of the tractor. D10s with a serial number after 3500 (someone correct me if I'm wrong!) are the larger engine.

The WD45 with wide front is a very nice tractor. I have one, and it is very dependable. Joe is correct, it will have more hp, and with the loader, sounds like a good price. Where are you located? As Joe says, others may be interested in the D-10. If it is near me, I may be interested, depending on its condition, etc. Dave

Is the WD a wide front? $1500 would be plenty high for a WD, even a wide front with a loader and in good shape. The D-10 is almost certainly a wide front. The D-10 won't have quite as many HP as the WD, but they usually sell quite bit higher than a WD. Loaders for these AC's often bring $200 to $300 at auction. If the D-10 is in good shape it is easily worth $1800. You need to check both tractors to see if they jump out of gear, that can get to be a costly problem to fix. If the tractors are in equally good shape the D-10 is the better buy as you can likely make some money by reselling it. If the WD has a wide front end and is in good shape, I think you would be ok at $1200. but $1500 is kind of pushing it's limit.

Price usually depends on area. Where I live the prices you mention are a steal for a tractor that runs and is in any kind of shape. I live in the Md./Penn. area, other places are likely different.

It turns out the WD is a WD-45 with a wide front paint great shape does not slip out of gear and runs great.

The D-10 has better paint and tin but again no loader and further away.

I think for my purpose of moving manure and pulling a spreader and moving snow the better buy might be the WD-45.

Is there an easy way to tell a WD from a WD-45?

The sure way is to look at the right side of the engine. A WD engine will have 2 removable covers on the lower portion of the block. A WD-45 engine will not have these, but be solid. Also check the serial number on the top of the left differential brake housing a WD-45 will be 146607 or higher. DO NOT go by a curved or straight shifter, these can have been changed over the years. The worst thing to go by is the decals! It sounds to me like both tractors are pretty good buys. I'm sure there would be some interest in the D-10 from guys on here if you wanted to help it sell by posting the owners phone #. The WD-45 should make you a fine tractor.
