I'm looking for a more or less 50 hp tractor. In the AC line around here there's not alot- a few WD-45's, some D-17's (pricey), and a lot of 170/175/180's, usually w/loader and cab. What are the big differences between the 45's,17's and 170/175/180? Other than the fact the last ones are ugly compared to the 17. BTW- this is dairy counrty and the tracors rust big time, so the cabs are usually pretty beat up, if that matters.

I have a WD45 that I really like, have used the 17's considerably, but really like the 170/180 for utilitarian purposes. They have the nice hydraulics, live power, three point and are very convenient to operate. The one-eighty will have more hp, sets higher and has that one extra step to get up onto them, but overall, a very good tractor. Dave

There can be a huge difference in price. Lots of people go pretty crazy over a D-17 for some reason. Yes they are a good tractor. A 170 with a loader that has been used every day of it's life in a dairy operation is most likely going to be fairly worn out. A tractor that hasn't spent it's life on the back end of a loader would be a better buy in my opinion. Also keep your eyes open for a D-19. They have more than the 50 hp you are looking for, but almost always sell for WAY less money that a D-19.

To correct my typing error: the D-19's sell for less money than D-17's. Yes they also burn more gas, just like a 6 cylinder car usually burns more gas than a 4 cylinder car. But a 6 cylinder doesn't have to work as hard to do the same job as a 4 cylinder.

I understand what you are saying about D-17s being pricey, but if you consider what a good new lawn tractor costs they are quite reasonable. If you are looking for an all around tractor in the 50HP class then you want a D17, and the SeriesIV is well worth the extra money.

The Wd45 and D17 Are closley related. The Wd45 was made from 1953-1957, the D17 was launched in the fall of 1957. The D17 had the longest production run of any other D series Tractor. There were 4 Different series of the 17, and it was in production from 1957-1967. The WD45, D17, and 170 all have the same 226ci Gas engine. The 170 is mechanically simliar to the D17 Series IV. The Sereies 4 is a highly sought after tractor because most had factory 3pt and the hyd. pump was truly live on these tractors. The Wd 45 does not have power director, as the d17 does. Other than that, that is about the only major difference. I hope this answers your question.
