I'm trying to find a mower or a brush hog for a 1955 CA. I need to keep at my 15 acres of fields. They were let go some years past and have been brush hogged a few times over the last couple of years. I want to finish the process of bringing them back. I was thinking of a 5 foot finish mower. The CA only has original 2 point hitch. Should I spend for the 3 point hitch conversion? What is available for this tractor. Thoughts? Advice? I'm pretty new to this. Thanks.

I would look for a belly mower if you are going to keep it mowed ours has a 6ft woods L306 it will handel 8-12 inch grass leaving it 4-6 in tall I was mowing every 2 weeks works grate If you were planing on not mowing that often or leting it go your tractor will not handel 6ft. belly mowers limet the tractor 3pt wont work with the rear bracket instaled keep an eye out and look at some tractors with mowers on them may be abel to get a nother tractor with a belly mower on it cheaper than just a belly mower

You guys are very helpful. My task now is to find a decent mower, either a follow or a 3pt hitch, and I think I'll let what I find dictate whether I do the 3pt conversion or not for the time being. And given I have about 2 acres of lawn I guess I'll look for a belly mower, too, rather than have to buy a lawntractor.

if you spring for the 3pth kit you can use the tractor for anything. a ca might not do well in heavy brush with a 5 foot a 4 foot is an option.

I have both the trailer type and 3-point mowers. The 3-point is much easier to use, especially if you need to back up. Either one will do the job and each has it's advantages. The trailer type is usually the cheapest, but I haven't seen a new one anywhere in the last 10 years. Used ones start at about $100 (5 footer) and go up for a servicable unit. The 3-point units cost a bit more, usually starting at about $200 or so for a good used unit (5 foot). Price on the belly mowers is out of my bracket, and they are usually finish mowers anyway. The 3-point units would require a 3-point adapter at the least and a 3-point aftermarket hitch at the most. You might want to start with a trailer type and upgrade later.
Either way you go, you will need an overrunning coupler for your PTO shaft so the spinning mass of the mower blades won't push the tractor into a fence or ditch. The PTO shaft on a CA connects directly to gears in the transmission, so when you push in the clutch, the mower will drive the gears and keep the tractor moving. This assumes that the hand clutch on your CA is not functional (most aren't) so there is no disconnect to the rear wheels. The overrunning clutches are about $50 or so, depending on where you buy them.

I have a WD that I mow with. I got with WOODS and they make IH 2-point and AC snap coupler parts that you can use with their mounted mowers. I put the snap coupler adapter from them on a LAND PRIDE
5ft. 3-point hitch mower. It has worked very well
for 10yrs. now.

You can either go with a pull behind (which you have to be careful of sharp turns so you don't rip the pto shaft apart). Or spend the $300 for the 3pt conversion. Or the nicest would be the belly mower but they cost way more new. The ca will handle any 5' mower very nicely. So the only thing is personal perferance. If you ever want to mow your lawn with it I'd look for a belly. for just pastures I would go with the 3pt over the pull behind. The nice thing with the pull behind is that any tractor with pto can run it with no special setup. AJ

Thanks - but I see I have a lot to learn. So the cheapest approach is "pull behind", which has no flex, so in the turns it rides its wheels and swings opposite the turn with no flex at the pto. If I have the 3pt conversion, a following mower would follow like a trailer, flexing at the hitch? can you also give me rough costs of the three approaches (follow behind, 3pt, belly)?

The pull behind will flex at the drawbar just fine. the problem is that it will not beable to do a 180deg turn in a 15' space cause the pto will start chattering from compressing too tight. which can start making parts crack and fly. (I have seen this done) the biggest key is don't turn too sharp. the pull behind is actually a trailer. The 3pt model is attached fast to the tractor. it will just stick out the back end by 6'. easy to back up cause there is no left to right pivot points. If you use your turning brakes on the tractor the mower is not bothered. as long as you have the room for the extra lenght behind you to swing around. Also the 3pt you can back under bushes and mow. Any one of the mowers can be had from $100 and up used. The new ones really depend on brand and quality. The belly mowers new run around $1500-$2500. not sure of the 3pt or pull behind. I think you can get cheap ones from $500-1000. check out the unoffical allis chalmers site allischalmers dotcom. ask in the forum there they can tell you more as there seems to be more traffic there. aj
