My 1960 Allis-Chalmers D-17 is ill. The engine starts promptly and idles smoothly. I use a 5ft. wide "Bush Hog" style mower for field mowing. Things go well for about 30 Minutes, at which time the engine begins to surge wildly. If I place the machine in neutral (no Load), it runs strongly. Placing it under load again, causes the surging. Decreasing the throttle delays the surging, but obviously cuts power. It's like a vapor lock. There's a small amount of rust in the tank (clogging??). I live in Denver (carb too rich??). Will keeping the fuel tank very full (increased head of pressure for gravity feed) help? Any suggestions are appreciated. Russell Daniel

Make sure your vent is not plugged. Clean filter/strainer. Maybe clean carb, take it apart and put it back together, blow out ALL passages. Check fuel flow by removing plug from bottom of carb, (not while engine is running). Do this as soon as you can after engine starts to run poorly.

You might try a filter in line and rebuilding the carb sounds like you have some rust in the carb clogged up the jets after it has run for awhile
