If it is a gearbox it is probably a Sherman, it is either a step up or step down but not both. You can't tell from the outside what it is.

The Sherman for a Ford was a step up and step down together but the one for the WC was a direct and up or a direct and down but not both together.

I didn't realize that there was an aftermarket gear reduction for the WC's. I'm working on my Grandfather's 36 WC and have a 38 WC parts tractor with the "disconnect" behind the transmission.

My Grandfather purchased the tractor when my father was 7 years old. It was the only tractor my grandfather ever owned. My Dad hates the tractor with a passion. I suppose that as a farm kid he had to operate it - for years. Actually my Dad used the tractor for farm chores in the 70's. 30 - 40 years with the same tractor. I'd be pretty sick of it to.

Thanks again for the information.

It's probably not a high/low gear arraignment. In 1938 Allis added a disconnect between the transmission and differential. The purpose of the disconnect was to power the PTO shaft and stop the forward motion of the tractor. Used when bailing hay.

Also used to raise the cultivator when stuck, too close to a fence, etc. Power lift was driven from between the transmission and that throwout lever. Without it, the wheels had to be moving forward to raise the cultivator. I've never heard of a two-speed either, but who knows what might have been invented. I have seen clutches that fit in that same area, and provided live pto power for baling, etc.
