I started the IB that I rebuilt and there is an oil pressure issue. It has all new bearings (including cam bearings) and the bottem end is fine as far as I can tell. I reused the original oil pump after disassembling and cleaning. It maintained oil pressure before the rebuild so I thought it would work. I saw no oil pressure on the gauge after initial start today. The new NAPA filter had oil in it so it was pumping some. I put a screw in the filter standpipe to restrict filter flow and changed gauges. The new gauge barely flickered at mid throttle and showed about 5 psi at full throttle. I figure that splitting and a new oil pump is probably in this tractors future. Before I do that, is there anything else I should try? Is there a plug somewhere that I could have forgotten? I knew the NAPA filter would drop pressure a little but didn't think it would lose it all. The oil is 15-40 weight.

If you have had the pump apart or if it has set up a long time you will have to prime the pump.Take the oil line apart that goes up to the head and squirt oil in it while idling and stand back. Be ready to shut it off and reconnect.

Your problem is your oil filter. Get an OEM filter, or one that someone else may recommend. It seems that there are only two other filters, besides Allis Chalmers, that work. And no, I don't think Fram made one of them.

Actually Fram Filters ( should be c159) are correct now. They have original flow restiction.

Well when you figure it out, get rid of that filter. NAPA filters are good for one thing, about a 1000 yard shot and thats it

Allyn, Throw the NAPA filter away! Use a Fram filter c-159. Check the archives, been a lot of problems with the NAPA filters for these tractors. If that doesn't cure the problem post again, Dale

Thanks for the reply. The filter does not seem to be the problem. I ran the engine without the filter (blocked the bypass with a fuel hose over the standpipe) and it made no difference. I am thinking relief valve problem. The only other thought is gas in the oil, but I don't see how that could happen with the updraft carb.

Could you have forgot the plunger that goes in the end of the cam? did you prime the pump? A new pump will cost over 200 dollars.

Thanks for the reply. I am sure I put the button in the front of the cam, if that is what you mean. The pump is pumping, it just appears to not be putting out enough volume to develop pressure. Stuck vane maybe? I have another used pump I could try.

Allyn, Someother things to look for. (1)pick-up tube in oil pan clogged, (2)Bad clearances in the oil pump, (3)Rotor blades in oil pump installed wrong, (4)Stand pipe in oil filter housing driven down to far, (5)cork gone in the ends of valve rocker arm assembly, (6) Wrong stud in the rocker arm assembly, (7)thrust plunger at the front of cam missing or spring bad, (8)Bad clearances in cam or crank bearings, (9)relief valve ball missing or spring bad, (10) other oil passages clogged. Allyn, down in my area if you blink a couple of times the dirt dobbers will build and plug you up, it can be aggrevating. Good luck! Dale

Try the other pump. Make sure the vanes are facing the right way and the springs aren't cocked. Make sure relief ball isn't warn and spring is good.

Good luck, let us know what you find.
