I have been workingon a 51 WD, I have not had it apart yet, so here is everything I know. It has a good carb on it, new exhaust manifold. Has all new 6 volt system, it is dist not mag. It has descent power to it, but runs and idles extremely rough. From what research I have done, it has very high compression. It tested out at 124, 124, 121, and 123. A accurate and calibrated gauge was used for the compression test. It has absolutely great oil pressure. It doesnt smoke much till it gets warmed up, then she smokes a blue, with a few specks of oil out the exhaust, but not a shower. when its cold, idles rough and doesnt smoke, but as soon as its warm, starts smoking and smoothes out some.
What is going on? Is there a way to tell if someone has changed out the crank for a 45 and would that increase the compression like this? It still has the 3" head(older) on it. What is causing the problems? I am thinking its the guides and or valves. What to do you all think?

Just a little more info, the air cleaner cap is unobstructed as is the rest of the inlet passage. I tried it even with the oil bath unhooked, straight carb and no change. Also, in regards to the oil pressure, I am running straight 30 non detergent. I am getting maxed out (30#) pressure until it warms up then drops to about 15#.

If you are losing oil from the oil bath air cleaner don't forget to check the air inlet tube
and the inlet "umbrella". These can have so much dirt in them that almost no air can go down the tube. And then there is the occasional wasp nest
in them too. The engine will create so much vacuum
that it will suck the oil bath dry looking for air. My 2 cents..... Good Luck!

dupontsniper; Has this engine been overhauled recently? If not, I would say you're on the right track. You might also check oil control rings, Head bolt torque, un-even torque can allow oil seepage as engine heats up, partly blocked oil drain back passages in the block can cause pressure build up that will force oil past rings and valve seals. Rough idle/run cold can be a vacum leak in the intake manifold or carb base gasket that seals as engine heats up and parts expand. If engine has had an overhaul recently, the rings and valve guides may not have sealed yet. Hope this helps. John

Hi, no it hasnt been overhauled, in fact it was a basket case about a year ago, completely redone the tractor and was waiting on the motor until I finished getting an E motor ready, but cant take this anymore. There is no leaks around the manifold, have sprayed the whole are with ether and everything is ok. What is the torque down on the head bolts? I can pop the cover off and check them. This was basically a saved tractor, and am surprised at the compression and oil pressure, these are the 2 factors that are steering me away from the cylinders as culprits and more towards the head. How can you check the oil return passages for obstructions? Thanks again, Shane

I just read on another post that torque is 90 for the bigger studs and 25 for the smallers. My manual says valve clearance is .010 when warmed up.

I also should say that when he said big and small studs I am assuming he was referring to the 1/2" and 3/8" diameter studs and not the long and short 1/2"

There is a possibility you are getting oil from the oil bath air cleaner, if it was over filled. Check the inside of the hose to the carb, for oil residue, if this was the problem. Also could be valve guides worn. High compression would have nothing to do with oil usage. If it was low compression, it might indicate worn rings.
