Billy; Does it go into any gear without the clutch or just second and third?? If the shift fork(s) appear normal, then you're problem could be more sever. If it will go into all gears, running, without the clutch. Then I would suspect the clutch hub may have broken out of the clutch disk or the pressure plate springs have broken, (less likely). In extreme cases, the input shaft, bearing or gear may be faulty. What sort of noise was the transmission making, does it make a simular, less sever, noise while moving the tractor without the PTO? Whining somewhat is normal for these old girls, unless of course, the tranny has been re-built. Grinding, growling, screeching, rumbling and chattering is a heads up that something is about to go south. Hope this helps, John

John, The noise sounded like it was tring to jump out of gear with the PTO enguaged. don't remember if it did it without PTO enguaged. This sound only happened once and went away once I started going. She has been grinding alittle trying to get her in gear for some time now. I mowed for about an hour with no problems. I got bogged up in grass and dirt and stalled the tractor, a slow stall not a hard clump. decided to break for lunch when I came back she would'nt move.

Pull the side cover off the transmission. If a fork has worn down or bent, repain and reassemble.I have seen the shift leaver pop out of place as well. You will not be able to tell untill you remove that cover that has the forks attached as an assembly. Kinda tricky getting every think lined and back in place but it can be done. Very few times have I slid it back on the first try with the transmission on the tractor. The biggest problem is bumping one of the slide gears while trying to get the forks in the grooves on the gears. You will see what I mean when you get it apart. Don't give up they will go togather. I about lost my cool on one out in a wet plowed field, but I was able to get it in.
