Will a d17 diesel run a 851 new holland baler without straining it too bad? Thanks

I have a 851 that I have pulled with a Ford 5000 (65hp) and a Heston 70-66 (70 hp). In full winrows (bermuda, johnson grass and sudan) it gave both of them all they wanted. The specs on a D17 say about 52hp so I believe that you would have problems but, I have never owned a D17.

Personal experience with the 851 is that they don't like light winrows you have to keep them full of hay to make good bales and to keep them from plugging. I also found the chains to be a genuine maintenance magnet, especialy in Texas summers!
