I just sold my 600 series unit planter. I am looking for a D/A 385 planter. I'm intrested information, good and bad points, things to watch out for, etc. I no-till and wondering if you can go 5-6 mph? With all the mergers are parts readily available? Are different seed discs needed for corn and soybeans? Thanks in advance.

Last I heard, DA had sold the 385 planter to Landoll. I believe Landoll made some improvements such as changing the seed meter housing from plastic to cast aluminum. Biggest problem I had with the 385 unit with the plastic housings was the thin metal wear ring around the outside edge that the seed disc runs against. The wear ring is glued to the plastic housing. Be sure to check that the wear rings are firmly glued to the housing. If they are loose, seed will work in behind them, pushing the seed disc out, and spilling massive amounts of seed on top of the ground. Had that happen more than once. Another thing to watch---the planter air system will force very fine dust into the bearing in the center of the housing, eventually causing the bearing to bind up. It's not a ball bearing, just a sleeve with a shaft through it. Needs to be cleaned periodically--I used carb cleaner and WD40.
Can't tell you about no-til capability--mine was strictly used on conventional till.
Yes, you need different discs for different seed types. Different size discs for larger or smaller size seed corn. I had 2 or 3 different corn discs. Just 1 for soybeans.
I don't know if parts are still available from AGCO, or if you have to get them from Landoll.
The 385 does an excellent job of planting if everything is right, but it does have a few little oddities you have to watch for. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. One last question. Would you recommend one or should I look for something else?

I'm pretty hesitant to make recommendations as to what someone else should buy. Too many variables that I'm not privy to: availability, price & condition of 385 planters availability, price & condition of alternatives availability of parts personal preferences, etc., etc.----- -
Bottom line---it's gonna have to be your call.
Good luck

I just purchased a 385 planter and had a bunch of questions - if you find someone willing to answer.

Thanks,
Steve
