Allis Chalmers WD or WD45?

I have acquired my father in laws "WD45" so the "decal" says. He has been gone for 13 years now. He always referred to this tractor as a WD not a WD45. Is there a way of just looking at it to tell the difference? Where is the serial number located? I know nothing about these orange tractors but I am soon to find out. Nice project ahead of me.

A quick look- 45's spark plug holes in head are tall (because of the 4.5 stroke). Manifold beefier. Radiator taller; curved gearshift & when you shift gears they seem closer together-syncromesh. If rolling along at about half throttle you can quickly clutch it & go from 2nd to 3rd like right now -it's a 45. 45's had 13 in rims for 14.9 tires; solid top lift arm latches for the snap coupler. If it backfires red, it's a 45. If blueish backfire-an old WD. If you have to move gear shift lever a good distance to put it in 3rd, it's an old WD. If 3rd is just a short click away, it's a 45.

I helped my father in law farm with those bouncy
WD's and 45"s. The WD usually had sreaight cut gears, and straight shift levers. However the later version of WD's had the improved engine
{45} but still with straight cut gears, and straight shift levers. I think you will find if
you have a slender curved shift lever and taper cut gears , you have a true production WD45. In our experance we loved the 45"s engine the best but preferred the straight cut gears. They seemed to hold up better. So we swaped in the older transmissions, and put up with that old howl
that the older cut gears made. Bottom line, in the quest for more power, the last 50 some years that the WD replaced the WC and WF many combanations were possible. have fun.

The first WD's to have the 226 cu in engine were not referred to as "WD-45's". That name came later when Allis realized that the old WD now had significantly more power and it made good marketing sense to come up with a new name. I believe ser # 146607 thru 160384 were WD's with the bigger engine. At about ser#160385 the new designation WD-45 came into being. I remember when the first 226 engines appeared in the WD. We referred to them as "high headed WD's". The tractor was constantly being improved with such things as power steering, curved shift lever, larger rims to accomodate wider tires, a diesel version, etc.

WD engine blocks had an inspection plate on the side of the block; WD 45's did not. However engines could be and often were swapped between models. WD shifters were usually straight and WD 45's were usually curved back toward the operator. However I believe that there are cases of this being switched. Serial numbers are your best bet to ID this tractor. The serial number should be found at the left brake cover or the left rear of the axle housing. I believe that both WD's and WD 45's began with a "WD" followed by a number. Numbers 7 - 146606 are WD's and numbers 146607 - 236958 are WD 45's. THis info was taken from Terry Dean's AC Data book. In addition to the numbers, some letters may be found after the serial numbers. A "G" indicates a tractor designed to run only on gas. A "K" indicates one that will run on low octane fuel or gas. A "D" indicates a diesel tractor; I think you would have noticed this already. Anyway, either tractor is a great machine. Have fun.
