Hi,
i just remove the manifold off my 1950 WD. All but one nut came off without snaping off. I remove the stud with the snapped off head and one other without snapping it off in the head. i was feeling very disspointed until i got an idea. i first drilled a centered piliot hole then drilled a sized down from the drill that would be used for a 3/8's tap. tried to get the rest of what was left of the stud, i got one to come out without haveing to drill it with the drill for the tap and then tap the tread. So the rest of then i drilled out with the drill for a 3/8 then taking the tap and clean out the rest of the stud with the tap. I nitice one thing when i did it is the fractor tread were H1 quality, a real tight fitting tread, today you be lucky to see a H3 tread. So the question i have is when i was take the stud out and the one that i got out i noticed that the hole gose threw to something else in the head. I am thing that it is the water jacket behins them studs. Did they go all the way threw to the water jacket. i was all what the stock length and the tread size for both ends. i know size of the engine head tread is 3/8 and where is the best place to buy the hardware. what is the best metal to make the studs out of if i have to make them(steel, stainlessSteel, brass).
Note to do what i did takes some skill that has to be developed over time. I helps to be a machinest or milwright.
Thanks alot in advance Sorry if i spelled anything wrong

Yes, some of the holes go all the way to the water jacket. Drilling out the broken stud is the best way IF a person takes the time to get the pilot hole centered.I usualy pick the remnents of the stud out with a pick as far in as I can get them, That helps to keep the tap in line and takes out the stud, not the casting inbetween. Since you are aware of thread fits you probably are aware that taps are availible in tighter fits than the std H-3 hardware items? The studs are availible at AGCO if you wish to go that route. I keep a joint of 3/8 304 stainless in the shop just for this purpose and thread both ends on the lathe. I also keep a joint of 1/2" 304 SS to make nice thick washers for under the nuts. I thread one end S.A.E. and use brass nuts. It costs very little more to do them this way and the fix is permanent.
